Candles

This is the transcript from a sermon a short sermon I preached last Saturday July 9th.

Who knows what a candle is made out of?

Wax and wick. Fuel is wax, flame is held in wick.

Both parts are necessary for a candle. Both fuel and flame. Both parts are essentially useless without the other.

Even with both parts together you can still end up with something useless.

What’s the purpose of a candle? TO BURN!

So if a candle refuses to burn, what does that make it? USELESS

What good is a useless candle?

Just like a candle has two parts. We as human beings have to parts that are necessary to make our spiritual lives work.

MIND and SOUL.

We can have all the Biblical knowledge in the world but if it doesn’t affect our soul, it is useless.

We can be super emotional, and have all the feelings in the world and all the religiosity but if it’s not based on Biblical truth, then it is Useless.

We can have both knowledge and emotion, and still be useless if we refuse to put it into action.

As human beings God created us for a purpose. Colossians 1:16 says, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him.”

Just like a candle has one purpose: To burn. We have one purpose. To Worship Christ.

We were created to worship God. We created by Him and For Him. That is our absolute purpose. For Him.

1 Cor 8:6 says

“yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.”

We exist for HIM! That’s our reason for life.

We have purpose.

But Romans 1:21-25 says

“For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.  Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.  Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.”

Being sinful creatures we exchange worship for the Creator, for the created. We all worship something. The question is, what do you worship?

A lot of people worship money or Materialism. Some worship pop stars or athletes. Others alcohol, sex, or drugs. There are a lot of things that people worship.

What do you worship? How can you tell?

2 simple ways to determine what you worship.

  1. What do you spend the majority of your time doing, or thinking about?
  2. What do you spend the majority of your speech talking about?

What you love most you talk about the most, you think about the most, and you do the most.

Just like a candle that refuses to burn is useless, a person who doesn’t do what he was created to do is useless. So a person, who isn’t worshipping God, is useless.

So how do we not be useless?

In order to answer that we first need to determine what type of candle we are.

I believe there are essentially 4 types of candles.

  1. 1.       A candle that believes it’s not a candle but something else.
  2. 2.       A candle that acts like it’s lit, but in reality has refused to be lit.
  3. 3.       A candle that is lit but barely burning.
  4. 4.       A candle that burns brightly.

Let’s look a little deeper at each of these candles.

  1. 1.       A candle that believes it’s not a candle but something else.
  • Rejected Truth, refuses to believe.
  • Romans 1, do not honor God. Exchanged glory of God for Images.
  • Know there is a God inherently
  • Worship other things. Worshiped the creature
  • No purpose in life/purpose for themselves
  • A candle who thinks it’s a teapot/ live for something else
  • Useless candle
  1. 2.       A candle that acts like it’s lit, but in reality has refused to be lit.

Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’  And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

  • Has knowledge of God.
  • Acts like a lit candle
  • Don’t know God
  • No faith
  • Don’t do the will of God
  • Playing Church
  • Wrong motives
  • In it for themselves
  • Refuse to recognize their purpose
  • Neglect the object of worship which is God
  • No relationship
  • Refuse to be lit
  • Useless
  1. 3.       A candle that is lit but barely burning.

Matthew 5:15 –  “Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.”

  • Believes in God
  • Realizes purpose
  • They are burning/dimly
  • Wants to fulfill purpose
  • Being held back/ sin/ fear/ lack of knowledge
  • Can’t keep hiding under the basket
  • Let light shine
  • Realize God’s will and purpose for them by worshipping Him daily

4.       A candle that burns brightly.

Matthew 5:15-16  ““Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

  • In the will of the Lord
  • Realized their purpose
  • Light in the world/expose darkness
  • Not just words, but deeds
  • See good works and give glory to God
  • This candle is ON FIRE!

Sometimes as Christians we burn bright, and other times we are dim. Sanctification process.

But if you have never burned bright, you might want to ask yourself if you are burning at all?

Maybe you are like the 2nd candle? Who acts like they are burning

Ask yourself: Which type of candle are you?

Which does God want you to be?

The Bottom line is that…

No candle can light itself. God works through His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to set our hearts on fire for HIM.

Whether you are not burning, burning dimly, or burning brightly, Christ is the source of that light.

He is the only way get your light to shine. He is the source and the strength of your light.

The more you rely on Him the brighter you will shine.  All things were created by Him and For Him!

If you know you are a candle who has never been lit, then maybe it’s time to make that decision?

To place your life in Christ’s hands. To fulfill your purpose, to follow Him.

This requires turning away from your old manner of life and turning to Christ.

Place your trust in Him that He died for your sins and rose again on the third day proclaiming that HE has the power over death!

He will awaken you to a new life.

A life of power in the SPIRIT! That enables you to fulfill your purpose of worshiping Him.
